Job Description

We are now accepting applications for the 2018 Harry S. Truman Fellowship (in National Security Science and Engineering). The Truman Fellowship is Sandia National Laboratories’ most prestigious post-doctoral fellowship with about two recipients each year.

The Truman Fellowship provides the opportunity for recipients to pursue independent, ground-breaking research, based on a research proposal developed by the applicant, in support of Sandia’s national security mission. To be considered for this role, applicants must display extraordinary abilities in scientific research and show definite promise of becoming outstanding leaders in the research they pursue. Applicants are expected to have solved a major scientific or engineering problem in their thesis work or to have provided a new approach to solving a major problem, as evidenced by a recognized impact in their field.

The Truman Fellowship is a three-year appointment and normally commences on October 1, although exceptions may be made to accommodate special circumstances.

Required:

  • PhD conferred within the past three years or completion of PhD requirements by commencement of appointment (10/1/2018)
  • No previous postdoctoral appointments at a national laboratory (pre-postdoc internships excluded)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance, which requires US citizenship

Desired:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.5/4.0 for undergraduate degrees and 3.7/4.0 for graduate degree(s)
  • Creativity and self-motivation
  • Compelling research proposal relevant to Sandia’s national security mission
  • Good communication skills
  • Interest in working in a team-oriented, dynamic environment
  • Broad-based background and extensive knowledge in one or more of the following areas: bioscience, computing and information science, engineering sciences, geoscience, materials science, nanodevices and microsystems, and radiation effects and high energy density sciences

Department Description:

Each Truman Fellow will work in a department relevant to the research being proposed. Department 1171 supports the selection of Truman Fellows, who are part of the science and technology (S&T) community at Sandia, on behalf of the Chief Research Officer (CRO). The CRO is responsible for the core science and technology capabilities in support of our national security mission and successful management and implementation of research strategies and initiatives across the broad S&T community.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
