Project Description

This PhD studentship is being offered within the Horizon 2020 SC5-14-2019, Visionary and integrated solutions to improve well-being and health in cities, project framework “GOGREEN ROUTES”. The objective of GOGREEN ROUTES is to position European cities as world ambassadors of urban sustainability. GOGREEN ROUTES transdisciplinary consortium will pioneer a unique approach augmenting Nature-based solutions (NBS), urban design with the goal of fostering a positive human-nature relationship, flourishing nature connectedness and promoting citizen engagement through digital, educational and behavioural innovation.

NBS are innovations that are inspired and supported by nature, that simultaneously provide environmental, social and economic benefits and help to build resilience, especially in an urbanising society and in the face of increasing climate change pressure. These solutions bring more nature and natural features (e.g. green infrastructure) into cities to benefit health and well-being in addition to co-benefits for biodiversity, climate adaptation and resilience, and pollution attenuation. The role of this PhD will be to evaluate perceptions of the natural environment and contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of citizen science activities. GOGREEN ROUTES aims to re-conceptualise environmental quality and co-create a new index of urban green space-the EQ Index (EQI)-which will consider not just co-hazards but positive features of the natural environment (e.g. thermal comfort and good air quality). The role will contribute to the development of the EQI and also involve supporting the implementation of NBS online training tools to foster sustainability.

A candidate must be highly motivated and have excellent research, writing, and communication skills, skills in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, and some project management skills. As this is a large consortium project, each PhD candidate will have access to a large network of European researchers and practitioners and you will be expected to engage with them regularly. This offers the potential for networking with other early career researchers, gaining access to future career opportunities, as well as creating additional research funding proposals.
